Iona’s Story – Finding Confidence, Purpose and Belonging

When Iona first came to Eat Sleep Ride, she was struggling to engage with education and everyday life. School felt overwhelming, and her needs were often misunderstood within a traditional learning environment. Confidence was low, and she found it difficult to feel safe, settled or heard.

Iona began attending Eat Sleep Ride just one day a week. At first, she was quiet and unsure, but being around the horses quickly gave her a sense of calm and safety. Over time, her confidence began to grow.

As she became more involved, Iona started taking part in a wider range of activities, including yard work, animal care and creative tasks such as writing. Her communication skills improved noticeably, and she began to take pride in what she was achieving.

Iona has since progressed through a number of formal equine qualifications, including:

  • ABRS Stable Management Levels 1–3

  • ABRS Riding Progression Levels 1–2

  • Responsible Groom Level 1

  • British Horse Society Horse Health qualification

She has continued to challenge herself and is now working towards higher-level qualifications that require greater independence, responsibility and commitment.

“I’ve developed strong practical skills and now assist with daily tasks on the yard. I take real pride in caring for the animals and the equipment,” she says.

Today, Iona is a valued and reliable member of the Eat Sleep Ride community. Outside the yard, she has also made significant progress — managing responsibilities, work and relationships with far more confidence.

When asked what Eat Sleep Ride has meant to her, Iona simply says:
“If I hadn’t found this place, everything would be different.”

Her journey shows the power of consistent, relationship-based support in helping young people build confidence, resilience and belief in themselves.
