Why we do it
At Eat Sleep Ride, we believe every horse deserves safety, dignity, and purpose. Many of the horses who come to us have experienced neglect, trauma, or were at risk of slaughter. We see beyond their past — recognising their potential to heal, to teach, and to connect people through shared trust and learning.
How we do it
Our rescue and rehoming work is grounded in compassion and evidence-based care. Each horse is assessed using the Sue Dyson Pain Ethogram to identify discomfort or behavioural signs of pain. From there, we create tailored rehabilitation plans including veterinary care, physiotherapy, correct nutrition, hoof care, and gentle handling. We prioritise the horse’s emotional recovery as much as its physical health.
Our team — led by Danielle McKinnon, BHS Stage 4 Coach and Teaching Horse™ Practitioner — works alongside experienced equine specialists, volunteers, and young trainees, ensuring every horse receives holistic support throughout their recovery journey.
What we offer
- Rescue and Intake: Providing safe refuge for at-risk or unwanted horses.
- Rehabilitation: Structured care plans for physical and emotional recovery.
- Rehoming: Once ready, horses are carefully matched with knowledgeable, compassionate homes through our trusted network.
- Lifetime Support: Every rehomed horse remains part of the Eat Sleep Ride family — we provide ongoing advice, welfare checks, and support to ensure their wellbeing.
Impact
Our rehoming programme gives each horse a second chance and, in turn, transforms lives — offering young people and volunteers the chance to learn empathy, responsibility, and leadership through their care.
