Eat Sleep Ride was one of around ten organisations across Scotland commissioned by Penumbra to carry out community-led research as part of Creating Hope Together, Scotland’s national suicide prevention strategy. We were trained and mentored in research practice by Scottish Development Trust.

Our study covered South East Scotland. Through one-to-one interviews with people affected by suicide, we asked three questions: what support was there when they needed it, what was missing, and what has helped most since.

People told us how much connection, nature and belonging matter in finding hope again. They also spoke about the part isolation, poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and trauma play in suicide risk in our area.

Our findings sit alongside the other studies in a national report that Penumbra will take to the Scottish Government.

Out of this work we are building Somewhere to Go, a space at Quarry Farm where people can come, be with the horses and talk.

Thank you to everyone who trusted us with their stories.
