The challenge:
The team wanted a different way to develop as leaders. They didn’t want another classroom session, but an experience that showed them how they actually work together.
What we did:
Working alongside our horses, the team took on a series of groundwork challenges. Horses ignore titles and intentions and respond only to what’s really being communicated. The team had to read each other, share the lead and adapt in the moment, with support from our qualified Herd Dynamics facilitators.
What changed:
- Leading through energy: the team learned that how they showed up mattered more than what they said.
- Everyone has a role: they worked as an interchangeable team, where anyone could step forward.
- Resetting after setbacks: when things went wrong, they learned to pause, start again and lead to a successful result.
- New leaders emerging: team members who don’t usually take charge stepped up to lead.
It took a while to build confidence with a different way of communicating. As the day went on, though, the team picked up on emotions, language and how comfortable each person was.
“It really showed shared leadership.” was the general takeway for the team on the day
